WARDOGS Recoil Control: Stance, Breath & Mags

Updated 29 Sep 2026 · Early Access
The short answer

To control recoil in WARDOGS, pull down, because most of the kick is vertical. Then stack the free fixes: go prone for about 30% less recoil or crouch for about 15%, hold your breath for the first four or five shots (up to 50% less on an LMG), and run the smallest magazine that still carries you through a fight. A vertical grip handles the climb, and on an LMG the bipod does more than everything else combined.

-30%Prone
-15%Crouch
Up to -50%Hold breath
4-5 shotsBreath lasts

WARDOGS recoil kicks mostly straight up with a little side-to-side drift. The AK-74's pattern climbs in a rough "7" shape, like a CS spray. None of the numbers below appear on the stats screen; they come from firing-range testing in late September 2026.

How much does stance reduce recoil?

Stance is the biggest free fix, and it works the same on every rifle and SMG class.

Recoil change by stance (assault rifles, SMGs and marksman rifles)
StanceRecoilWhen it is worth it
StandingBaselineMoving between cover, close range
CrouchedAbout 15% lessMost mid-range fights
ProneAbout 30% lessLong range and holding an angle

Does holding breath reduce recoil?

Yes, and more than most players think. Holding breath (Shift while aiming) is usually treated as a sway fix, but it cuts recoil too, by a different amount for each class:

Recoil change while holding breath, by weapon class
Weapon classRecoil while holding breath
LMGAbout 50% less
Marksman rifle (DMR)About 30% less
Assault rifleAbout 20% less
SMGAbout 15% less

The catch is duration. Your breath runs out after the first four or five shots of a burst, so the bonus covers the opening shots and then drops away. Fire in short bursts and let it refill between them.

Do bigger magazines add recoil?

Yes. The smallest magazine a gun takes has the lowest recoil, and each size up adds more. A 60-round magazine kicks clearly harder than a 30. Bigger magazines also add aim sway that the game never shows you. For scale: the smallest magazine fired crouched handles about like a 30-rounder fired standing.

Small mags lose to heavy armour

Against level 3 and 4 armour you need a lot of hits: an assault rifle takes about four headshots on a level 3 helmet. Once the lobby is wearing top-tier armour, you may need the extended magazine anyway, and then crouching and short bursts become how you control it.

How to control LMG recoil (M249 and PKM)

LMGs are where stance, breath and the bipod stack hardest. Hold G to deploy the bipod: it snaps to terrain or a ledge, and the recoil nearly disappears.

The two support LMGs, recoil by stance
LMGUnlock and costStandingCrouched + breathProne + breath
M249 SAW, 5.56, 850 RPMSupport 15, $3,200Uncontrollable with the 100-round box, still hard with 20UsableClose to bipod-level
PKM, 7.62x54, 600 RPMSupport 30, $4,500Easier than the M249Easier than the M249Easier than the M249

The PKM is easier to control than the M249 in every stance, and it hits harder at 55 damage per chest round against the M249's 28. The M249 fires faster, so it wins the close spray if you can hold it. The support class unlocks both, and the support leveling guide covers the fastest route to Support 30.

Which attachments reduce recoil?

Grip first, then muzzle. A vertical foregrip handles the vertical climb, which is most of the recoil. Angled grips (the Mini Angled and AFG) cut horizontal recoil instead. A horizontal brake like the Hexagon Brake takes out the side-to-side drift, but that muzzle only unlocks on the class you are levelling. Sway attachments do nothing for recoil. The full list, with prices, is on the best attachments page.

Is there a no-recoil build in WARDOGS?

No build removes recoil completely. The closest you get is an LMG on a deployed bipod. For a rifle, the lowest-recoil setup is the smallest magazine, a vertical grip and a horizontal brake, fired prone while holding your breath for the first shots. Tap single shots past mid-range instead of fighting a full-auto spray.

The recoil-control checklist

  1. Pull straight down; most of the kick is vertical.
  2. Crouch in mid-range fights, go prone at long range.
  3. Hold breath for the opening four or five shots, then burst.
  4. Run the smallest magazine that survives the lobby's armour.
  5. Fit a vertical grip, then a horizontal brake once your class unlocks it.
  6. On an LMG, deploy the bipod before you fire.
